Freshwater Pearl

Soft light, formed in layers. Freshwater cultured pearls are grown within freshwater mussels, where nacre builds around carefully introduced mantle tissue to create their characteristic lustre.

Formed in Fresh Water

Freshwater cultured pearls are produced in freshwater mussels. During cultivation, small pieces of mantle tissue are inserted into the mussel, stimulating nacre formation. Many freshwater cultured pearls are composed almost entirely of nacre, which gives them a distinctive depth and glow.

From Lake Biwa to Today

Commercial freshwater pearl culture developed in Japan, with Lake Biwa becoming especially important in the twentieth century. Its all-nacre pearls became known for their colour and lustre. As Japanese production declined, China became the leading centre of freshwater cultured pearl production.

Selected for Lustre

At Cirque D’Or, freshwater pearls are selected for lustre, surface quality, shape, colour, and proportion within the design. Their softly reflective surface brings an organic counterpoint to polished metal and precise geometry.

Natural Variation

Shape, tone, surface character, and lustre naturally vary from pearl to pearl. These subtle differences are part of the material’s individuality rather than imperfections.

Care

Freshwater pearls are relatively soft and should be treated gently. Avoid perfume, cosmetics, household chemicals, prolonged moisture, abrasion, steam, and ultrasonic cleaning. Wipe gently with a soft, slightly damp cloth and dry thoroughly before storage.
